Graduates of the UBC Master of Engineering Leadership (MEL) in Urban Systems are ready to step into a range of professional roles in urban infrastructure design and management to support smart cities and growing communities.
Our graduates stand out with their unique combination of skills. Over the course of their 12-month full-time, or 24-month part-time postgraduate degree, they have expanded their knowledge of engineering and urban planning through courses from UBC Faculty of Applied Science, including studies in the School of Community and Regional Planning and UBC Civil Engineering. They have also deepened their business and leadership skills through classes offered from UBC Sauder’s Robert H. Lee Graduate School.
This powerful interdisciplinary education enables them to lead multidisciplinary teams and complex projects. They are strategic thinkers who thrive in fast-paced environments as they collaborate with multidisciplinary internal and external stakeholders to develop innovative solutions and build resilient communities.

- Critically analyze proposals through the lens of multiple perspectives, and apply engineering economics to model, evaluate and analyze large-scale infrastructure projects and other initiatives
- Identify the direct and indirect influences of infrastructure and services on people, while understanding the critical roles played by a diversity of stakeholders in infrastructure projects and the delivery of sustainable services
